Kitty and the Midnight Hour by Carrie Vaughn Review

Kitty and the Midnight Hour (Kitty Norville, #1)

Kitty Norville is a midnight-shift DJ for a Denver radio station - and a werewolf in the closet. Her new late-night advice show for the supernaturally disadvantaged is a raging success, but it's Kitty who can use some help. With one sexy werewolf-hunter and a few homicidal undead on her tail, Kitty may have bitten off more than she can chew?

Urban Fantasy is not my to go genre. Mainly because I feel that everything has been done and every other book I've read is a copycat of something else. I just stick to Fantasy and YA books. I decided to give this one a try, first after reading this awesome review on Rabid Reads and secondly because of the summary. I thought Kitty and the Midnight Hour sounded fun and just went on Amazon and 1-clicked that baby.

I wasn't disappointed. I have to say that the concept behind Kitty and the radio show was very enjoyable. Kitty is a hilarious character. At the beginning of the book, she took me by surprise because I was expecting her to be a badass. She's a werewolf for crying out loud! But werewolves in this book are very different. You see, Kitty is the baby of the pack, she has to be submissive to the other wolves and do as she is told. Her fellow wolves were not the friendliest people/animals around and I was desperate for her to find her place in the pack. I'm happy to say that Kitty grows somewhat of a backbone by the end of the book and I'm excited to see her progress in the next books.

I feel like the romance takes a back seat in this book. The love interest was there and he's dreamy and everything, but there wasn't enough of him in this installment. Which was a little disappointing, butI'm hoping we'll see more of him in the next book.

I think overall this was a fun and different Urban Fantasy book. I will definitely continue the series, I can't wait to read more about Kitty and her awesome adventures.

  1. I really like this series too (though I've fallen several books behind). It started a bit slowly for me, but I stuck with it, and found that I really like Vaughn's writing style. I've read almost everything she's written now, YA and adult, and I've pretty much liked all of it. A few of her books have even crossed into the "LOVEIT" territory ;) Anyway, I'm glad you liked Kitty the werewolf *snickers* enough to want to stick with her. Great review!

  2. I need to try this series, especially if you liked it so much and this isn't normally one of your favorites.

  3. I'm glad that Josh as able to convince you to give this series a go. I started it as well way-back-when, but the heroine was a little too tame for my tastes. Granted, I never made it past book 1, so what do I know? LOL Great review!

    1. Thanks, Carmel! I really liked the way she grew a pair by the end of book 1! So hopefully she'll be a total badass by the end of the series!

  4. That's awesome, Beth. I'm glad we're both dipping our toes in this genre. I feel the same way about UF, so I know where you're coming from. I'm easing my way into it, though, so I'm going to put this series in the back burner for now.

Great review. I hope you'll enjoy the rest of the series!

  5. I guess UF isn't my go-to genre either, really. *shrugs* I just need to find some really good reads to convert me to the urban-ish side, I think. ;) This sounds pretty fun! Although I admit the cover doesn't reeeeally draw me in.

    1. Totally agree about the cover! But I learned a long time ago to ignore covers because sometimes they don't do the book justice. I hope you try this one. It was a very fun read!

  6. Oh gosh, I haven't read a werewolf story in a long time. And a DJ! One of my favorite UF is about vampire DJs, so I'm curious about this. Thanks for the review!

    1. I don't know if you'll like the werewolves here. Almost all of them are jerks. I think that's why I couldn't give this one 5 stars. I like my werewolves to be alphas but also loving and caring. The DJ part was a lot of fun, though.

  7. Haha I read the same review on Rabid Reads too and it made me super curious and now you liked it to so I really have to give it a try! I love the sounds of it and Kitty sounds so easy to like! I like badass as much as the next but it's how genuine and compelling the character is that matters the most and she sounds really well developed. I also like the originality when it comes to the werewolves. Great review! :)
