Unbreakable by Kami Garcia Review and Giveaway!!

Unbreakable (Legion, #1)
I never believed in ghosts. Until one tried to kill me.

When Kennedy Waters finds her mother dead, her world begins to unravel. She doesn’t know that paranormal forces in a much darker world are the ones pulling the strings. Not until identical twins Jared and Lukas Lockhart break into Kennedy’s room and destroy a dangerous spirit sent to kill her. The brothers reveal that her mother was part of an ancient secret society responsible for protecting the world from a vengeful demon — a society whose five members were all murdered on the same night.

Now Kennedy has to take her mother’s place in the Legion if she wants to uncover the truth and stay alive. Along with new Legion members Priest and Alara, the teens race to find the only weapon that might be able to destroy the demon — battling the deadly spirits he controls every step of the way.

Let me begin by saying that I refused to read Unbreakable at night. I was raised in a religious household so I believe in heaven, hell and even voodoo. To me they are real and I’m scared shitless of things that have to do with hell, demons and scary stuff. I give Kami Garcia 100 points for the scare factor. Some of the scenes were so terrifyingly vivid that I found myself cowering in fear under my blanket because they were so real and freaking scary. Even though I was terrified I liked the whole creeptastic feel that Unbreakable oozed.

The writing was also amazing. The first time I picked up the book it felt like I only read for 5 minutes and when I looked at the clock I was reading for nearly 2 hours. Time passed by and I didn't even notice! That was a nice surprise. Another think that surprised me is how much I liked Unbreakable. I was a little hesitant about reading this one because I didn't enjoy Beautiful Creatures. But in here the writing is clearer and just plain awesome.

I did have some issues with Unbreakable. One of those things was the love triangle. In my opinion it wasn’t necessary because the plot is so freaking fantastic that it doesn’t need the angst that comes with messy love triangles. Even though it was a mild one, it took away from the book. Then there was this whole thing with the marks that the legion members are supposed to get after they kill a spirit. I wish it was explained with more details. And finally, I wanted more Alara. She was amazing and strong. I wanted to know more about her and I wanted more of her showing off her voodoo powers.

The characters in this book have unique voices. Some I loved like Priest, Alara and Kennedy and some I just liked. Kennedy's character was a little tricky to connect with. I loved her but she doubted herself too much. There were also some key moments were she would get distracted by the twins and that frustrated me. But I know it was too much to take in and to be honest I would probably get distracted by them too. I know I said this already but, I truly think the book didn't need the love triangle.

I did enjoy Unbreakable a lot. I think fans of Kami Garcia and scary reads will enjoy it too.

  18. SCARY! Really, truly scary and not just supposed to be? I am so completely in. I can't wait for this. Seriously looking forward to it. I am a Christian as well. Scary stuff scares me in a huge way. I have to sleep with the lights on. SO I understand completely. And I am weird enough that I love it, still!
