Cover Reveal: Wade Awake by Shelly Crane

BLURB:
           A girl.
                   A coma.
                             A life she can't remember.
When Emma Walker wakes up in the hospital with no knowledge of how she got there, she learns that she's been in a coma for six months. Strangers show up and claim to be her parents, but she can't remember them. She can't remember anyone. Not her friends, not even her boyfriend. Even though she can't remember, everyone wants her to just pick up where she left off, but what she learns about the 'old her' makes her start to wish she'd never woken up. Her boyfriend breaks up with the new girl he's dating to be with her, her parents want her to start planning for college, her friends want their leader back, and her physical therapist with the hazel eyes keeps his distance to save his position at the hospital.
Will she ever feel like she recognizes the girl in the mirror?

                                                                        Expected Publication : Early 2013

EXCERPT:
One

Someone was speaking. No, he was yelling. It sounded angry, but my body refused to cooperate with my commands to open my eyes and be nosy. I tried to move my arms and again, there was no help from my limbs. It didn't strike me as odd until then.

I heard, "All I'm saying is that you need to be on time from now on." Then a slammed door startled me. I felt my lungs suck in breath that burned and hissed unlike anything I'd ever felt before. It was as if my lungs no longer performed that function and were protesting.

Then I heard a noise, a gaspy sound, and my cheek was touched by warm fingers. "Emma?" I tried to pry my eyes and felt the glue that seemed to hold them hostage begin to let go. "Emma?"

Who was Emma? I felt the first sliver of light and tried to lift my arm to shield myself, but it wouldn't budge. Whoever was in the room with me must've seen me squint, because the light was doused almost immediately to a soft glow. My eyelids fluttered without strength. I tried to focus on the boy before me. Or maybe he was a man. He was somewhere in between. I didn't know who he was, but he seemed shocked that I was looking up at him.

"Emma, just hold on. I'm your physical therapist and you're in the hospital. Your…" he looked back toward the door, "parents aren't here right now, but we'll call them. Don't worry."

I looked quizzically at him. What was he was going on and on about? That was when I saw the tubes on my chest connecting my face to the monitors. The beeping felt like a knife through my brain. I looked at the stranger's hazel eyes and pleaded with him to explain.

He licked his lips and said softly, "Emma, you were in an accident. You've been in a coma. They weren't sure if…you'd wake up or not."

Of everything he just said, the only thing I could think was, 'Who's Emma?'

Seduction and Snacks by Tara Sivec

Seduction and Snacks (Chocolate Lovers #1)
Claire is a twenty-something, single mom that grudgingly helps her best friend sell sex toys while she attempts to make enough money to start her own business to give her foul-mouthed, but extremely loveable (when he’s asleep) toddler a better life.

When Carter, the one-night-stand from her past that changed her life forever, shows up in her hometown bar without any recollection of her besides her unique chocolate scent, Claire will make it a point that he remembers her this time.

With Carter’s undisguised shock at suddenly finding out he has a four-year-old son and Claire’s panic that her stretch marks and slim to none bedroom experience will send the man of her dreams heading for the hills, the pair will do whatever they can to get their happily ever after.

Seduction and Snacks didn’t quite hit the spot for me. While it did have its moments I think it was just too much. So here’s what I loved and what I didn’t love so much.

What I didn’t love so much:

Man. How much “funny” can an author shove into a book? The answer: Too much. Seduction and Snacks is living prove of this. The characters sarcasticness took a lot away from the plot. It got to the point were I couldn’t take the characters seriously. Every time I was engaged in an important plot point the author pick that exact moment for the character to be silly. I love sarcastic character but when every character in the book acts the same way, it gets a little annoying. Sometimes I didn’t know from which POV I was reading because Clare and Carter acted the same exact way! Except he didn’t talk about his vajayjay as much as Claire did.

Another thing that annoyed me a little bit was how much the characters talked about their private bits. How many names can a person come up for genitalia? Read Seduction and Snack and you’ll find out. The word vagina was mention 127 times in a book that is 282 (kindle) pages long. ONE HUNDRED TWENTY-SEVEN times yo! That’s not counting the other names the author used to replace the word *whispers* vagina.

What I loved:

The beginning was good. It was funny. I loved the plot and Seductions and Snacks wasn’t boring at all. I loved some of the characters. While it had many things that annoyed me, I have to say that in some parts made me laugh my butt off. At the end I was still disappointed because the book had lots of potential. The author is amazing, talented and very very funny. I just wish the book was better balanced, less silly and more to the point.

Virtual Chair #11: Andrea from The Bookish Babe

Sitting on the virtual chair today is Andrea from The Bookish Babe. I love her site and reviews. I remember reading her review of On the Island by Tracey Garvis-Graves and loving it so much I had to buy the book. Now On the Island is one of my favorite books of 2012!  Follow her on Twitter and Facebook and don't forget to visit her awesome site

The Bookish Babe

Describe your blog in 3 words.

happy, positive, me

What’s your favorite not YA book?

that's too hard to say. I loved On the Island by Tracey Garvis-Graves. Also the Just Breathe series by Kendall Grey.

If you had a snail that could magically grant wishes, what would you name it?

That's easy, Snellie.

What is the funniest word you’ve ever heard?

The funniest word I've ever heard is wildly inappropriate. But I also like doomaflatchie. (I'm not even sure how to spell that!)

Do you prefer to read one book at a time, or several at once?

I used to read 2-3 at a time but now I.just read one.

What’s your favorite indie book?

I cannot answer that! I love too many indie books to pick. M. Leighton, Abbi Glines, Kendall Grey, Tammara Webber have written a few of my favorites.

What’s the weirdest thing you have ever eaten?

Calamari. Ick.

What song you hate, but can’t stop singing?

We Found Love in a Hopeless Place by Rihanna. Its basically the same phrases sung over and over.

Have you ever received a weird comment on your blog?

Definitely. They are spam comments from other websites. They're so random and weirdly phrased that I laugh. I don't even delete.

Where’s your favorite place to read?

The love seat on my living room. But if the weather's nice, outside while my kids play.

I think Snellie is a pretty badass name!! Thanks to Andrea for being awesome and answering my questions!!

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

Gone Girl
Rating: 4/5

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?

As the cops close in, every couple in town is soon wondering how well they know the one that they love. With his twin sister, Margo, at his side, Nick stands by his innocence. Trouble is, if Nick didn’t do it, where is that beautiful wife? And what was in that silvery gift box hidden in the back of her bedroom closet?

I’m going to divide this review into parts. Because Gone Girl has so many twists and turns I will try not to call the main characters by their names. And of course this review is spoiler FREE because spoilers are the devil!

First Half of the Book

I thought I wasn’t going to like the first half of the book. I read some reviews and all of them said the same thing: “Why was the first half of the book even necessary?” To my surprise I loved the first half of Gone Girl. I thought it was extremely vital to the whole book. The first half has a great amount of background story between the characters. The POV jumps from Nick in the present and entries from Amy’s diaries from several time frames. The jumps were not confusing at all. I thought this part of the book was brilliantly executed.

Second Half of the Book

Most of the things that happened I didn’t see coming. I see why most people liked the second half of Gone Girl better that the first. I did too. There’s more action, more dialogue and more everything. I don’t want to say anything else because I will spoil it.

The Characters

Wow. I just can’t begin to tell you how I felt about them. I felt guilty for feeling some sympathy toward them. I couldn’t help it. I was so involved in their story. I still cared for them after the truths were revealed.

The Plot

The plot was designed to play with the reader’s mind. It’s an irresistible puzzle. From page one I knew Gone Girl was different. This book will keep the reader awake at night trying to figure out what will happen next.

The Writing

Everything about Gone Girl is brilliant. The characters and the plot were amazing but it’s because of the writing that the book stands out so much. I haven’t read many books that can carry themselves like Gone Girl did.

Overall Gone Girl is a mind twister. It will mess with your mind and I assure you, you will ask yourself this after finishing the book: “Are the people in my life who they really say they are?”
