Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover Review

Maybe Someday.

At twenty-two years old, aspiring musician Sydney Blake has a great life: She’s in college, working a steady job, in love with her wonderful boyfriend, Hunter, and rooming with her good friend, Tori. But everything changes when she discovers Hunter cheating on her with Tori—and she is left trying to decide what to do next.

Sydney becomes captivated by her mysterious neighbor, Ridge Lawson. She can’t take her eyes off him or stop listening to the daily guitar playing he does out on his balcony. She can feel the harmony and vibrations in his music. And there’s something about Sydney that Ridge can’t ignore, either: He seems to have finally found his muse. When their inevitable encounter happens, they soon find themselves needing each other in more ways than one…

I’m torn about this book. I do have to warn you of some mild spoilers. Read at your own risk.

Colleen Hoover is such a talented writer. She had me hooked from page one. Her writing is so addicting that it was hard for me to put the book down for a few minutes. I have been taking forever with books lately and Maybe Someday is the first book in months that I have finished in one sitting. And let’s not forget about the music! Griffin Peterson took this book to the next level. Listening to the music in the book made everything feel real.

I was actually enjoying the book until about 50% in. Everything seemed innocent enough until it wasn’t. I don’t know if this is considered a spoiler but beware. Before I got into the book I knew that Ridge was in a happy relationship with another girl. But that he would eventually develop feelings for Sydney. But then everything got a little bit out of hand. I don’t know about you, but I’m totally against cheating. Sydney and Ridge don’t want to hurt Maggie (Ridge’s girlfriend) so they acknowledge their feelings but decide not to act on it. And that is where I have a problem. It does not matter that you are not acting on your emotions. If you are in a relationship and you know you are close to cheating on your partner either let them know and break up or get away from the person that will destroy your relationship. I know it was not easy for Ridge to break up with Maggie, but I still consider what he had with Sydney cheating. Call it emotional cheating. I think that’s the term, right?

The weird love triangle wasn’t the only problem for me. Towards the end Ridge starts to act like an asshat and Sydney still supports him. She makes a bunch of excuses for him and I was not ok with that. There were a lot of things said that I didn’t agree with and where such a turn off for me. That part of the book overwhelms everything else. There 're great scenes in the book and Ridge is a very romantic guy but I couldn’t ignore the part where he was still with someone else. I really tried to ignore it, but my heart was totally against everything this book stands for. My brain in the other hand was trying, as Sydney, to make excuses for what was going on. But I just couldn’t.

I love Colleen and I loved what she and Griffin did with the book. I just can lie and give this book a good review. It hurts me to not be raving about how good it was because believe me guys, the writing and pace were great. But the situation and the characters didn’t do it for me. I know I’m the minority here. There 're 900+ five stars reviews on amazon saying how great this book was. I bet most of you will enjoy it. And you know what? I hope you do, because I wish I had.

P.S. Has this happened to you guys? Where one detail in the plot ruins the whole book? I wish I didn't care as much but I just kept putting my self in Maggie's position and honestly it made me hate Sydney as much as I hated Ridge.

  1. I didn't know this one, but I know everyone seems to love the author so I know I need to try her one day. I understand your problems with the book and mainly for the cheating part... It's always a little difficult.

    1. Definitely try her other books. Slammed was my favorite!

  2. Yeah, I would be really annoyed with this, too. I read a fairly detailed spoiler of what happens on The Reader's Den, and I think I would have been tempted to throw my Kindle across the room. :/ Don't blame you for having mixed feelings! Sorry you were disappointed.

    1. I so wanted to throw my Kindle and break it into little baby pieces! But I'm ok now. I just need to find the next great book :)

  3. Yep, not for me. I don't do cheating. I don't care how "good" the reason is--it you're too attracted to another person to resist them, then you need to end it with whoever you're with. Relationships that are founded on lies and/or cheating cannot end well. (This is why I hate Jane Eyre, fyi).

  4. Oh no! I have heard so many great things about this one that I had to purchase it. Now I am so nervous to start it. I am so sorry you didn't like this one more.

  5. I rated this the same way and actually wrote a rant about it. I didn't know that Ridge had a girlfriend before reading, and if I did, I honestly wouldn't have read it. This is the first book I've read from this author and it was a huge disappointment. The only things I liked here were the side characters' humor and the writing. Although I'm glad I'm not the only one, it's still sad that you didn't like this. D:

  6. i'm very much like you. I had mixed feelings about this one. On one hand I could see the innocence in it and on the other i was pissed off about the whole "cheating" idea. I kept flip flopping during my reading experience. I was so confused about everything. I did manage to enjoy the romance between Ridge and Syndey and I totally did swoon but then whenevever i remembered he was in a relationship I wanted to give him a swift kick in the balls. I think we're on the same boat with this one!

  7. This is probably waaaay out of my typical genre read, but I saw a few 4-5 star reviews and was tempted. But the whole cheating thing...I mean, I don't GET it. Because if one girl breaks up with her guy because he cheated on her, why would she go cheat with another guy who already has a girl?? (Gee, that sounded complicated.) I think I would just bash my brains out on this. So a definitely skip. :(

    1. Too complicated, girl. I think if this is not your typical read then you won't enjoy. But who knows. :)

  8. Thanks for the honest review. I definitely think Ridge and Sydney went a bit TOO far in the emotional department, they could have split it up but I think because they needed each other for the music and the accommodation. Lovely review though!

  9. I most certainly have had one plot detail ruin and entire book for me, and it is the WORST! So sorry that it happened to you. I appreciate your honesty!
